Google Home Mini: the first generation, for those who want an assistant always at hand

First on our list is the cheapest and smallest Google smart speaker. The Google Home Mini is the most compact and economical in the Google Home family, and is perfect for small rooms or spaces where you don’t want it to stand out too much. This is the 1st generation, which is now called Google Home Mini.

It carries out the same functions as its older brothers, so it is not cut in any way. But it has some limitations associated with its small size (it has a diameter of 98 mm). The audio quality is not very high and neither is the volume , because the speaker is smaller than the other speakers in the range.

With this in mind, it is more suitable as an assistant to answer questions or to control TV and other electrical appliances than to listen to music. Of course, it can work as a music speaker perfectly and the quality is enough, but if you are going to use it to put hours into Spotify and the like, choose a Google Home better.

Similarly, the two microphones don’t have a great range , and you’ll have to yell a bit if you want me to hear you from the other end of the room, or in a large room.

In this sense, it  is more suitable for use in a small room, such as the bedroom or bathroom, or as a second speaker , when we already have a Google Home or a Nest Hub.

And what can you do with a Google Home Mini? Well, everything you expect from these types of devices: ask to play your music lists, ask yourself everything you want, check the time, update your schedule, set alarms and timers, translate conversations, control hundreds of compatible appliances, and much more .

If you connect it to a Chromecast you can control the TV, ask him to put your favorite series on, to increase or decrease the volume of the TV, etc.

It also has physical volume buttons on the speaker itself, as well as another to disconnect the microphone.

Google Home Mini is a good way to get started in this of smart speakers because it is the cheapest , but it has a problem: its successor, the Google Nest Mini, is already on sale, which costs the same and is more powerful and advanced. Our advice is to buy it only if it is cheaper than the Nest Mini.

Google Home conforms to the classic speaker concept, at least as far as its looks are concerned. And that is what makes it advisable for those who are going to use it mainly as a musical speaker , without that giving up its other functions.

It has a larger speaker than the Mini and is completely clear, unlike the Nest Hub, which has it partially covered by the screen. Therefore it is the one that offers the best 360-degree sound in the entire range . If you are going to use it to play your Spotify playlists, podcasts, piped music, etc., this is your choice.

Of course, you have to take into account that it is worth double that the Mini …

Another factor to consider is that your mics also have a longer range , so it can be used in large rooms or with a lot of ambient noise.

Otherwise, it offers the same functions as its younger siblings. By integrating the Google Assistant you can perform the same functions as on but now without depending on it, using only the speaker. Use your voice to play your music and podcast lists, ask questions, check the weather, set your schedule, follow kitchen recipes, set alarms and timers, translate conversations, control hundreds of compatible appliances, and much more.

Connect it to a Chromecast to control or YouTube with the voice on your TV .

The upper part of the speaker is tactile. There are the volume controls, and you can also tap to get their attention without saying OK Google , or to stop alarms and timers.

Nest Mini: 2nd generation, a private assistant for larger rooms

Google has decided to group its home devices under the Nest brand. For this reason, the 2019 generation of smart speakers has abandoned the Home designation, and the successor to the Google Home Mini is the new second-generation Google Nest Mini.

Aesthetically it is almost identical to the previous one. It only changes that both the base and the fabric now have the same color. And it also has a hole to hang it on the wall.

The new Nest Mini has the same functions as Home Mini, but it has some improvements. It has a more powerful processor and uses more Google Cloud and Artificial Intelligence, so it can answer questions and interpret orders faster.

It also has a better speaker , with more volume, and the bass is twice as powerful as its predecessor. It also has a third microphone to better capture orders in noisy environments, and from further away.

Another improvement is that when you approach it, the volume touch buttons light up, so you know where you have to play.

The only novelty is that it includes a new intercom function : it can be used as an internal telephone line to talk to people who are in another room in the house (if they have their own speaker, of course).

Otherwise it can do the same as the Home Mini: play your music and podcast lists, answer your questions, check the weather, update your schedule, set alarms and timers, translate conversations, control and hundreds of compatible appliances, and much more. plus.

If we have recommended the Home Mini to all those who are looking for a personal assistant rather than a music player, or as a second speaker, this Nest Mini serves the same purpose, but it is more suitable if you live in a house with large rooms , because both microphones as the speaker have a longer range. Taking into account that both are the same, at the same price we recommend the Nest Mini, more modern and powerful.

Nest Hub: for lovers of recipes and with a screen for YouTube

Google Nest Hub breaks with the concept of speaker by also incorporating a screen . This completely changes the functions and the way of displaying information of this device.

Having a screen, it no longer communicates only by voice. You can now show us videos, photos, maps, and visual or text information associated with that voice.

Another important functionality is its ability to be passively useful : the screen can show information that we can customize at all times: our agenda, the calendar, the ambient temperature, the weather forecast, etc.

It is the only Google speaker that also works with Windows and Mac , in addition to iOS and Android.

Nest Hub is ideal, for example, to prepare recipes in the kitchen . Since not only will she tell us the steps with her voice, but she will also show the elaboration on video.

The screen is not very large, it is a 7-inch panel with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels , so it cannot replace a TV. Not even a tablet. But it is better than the to watch YouTube or while you cook or relax in bed, since the base (the speaker) is more comfortable than holding the with your hand.

It is also a touch screen, so you can use apps, control household appliances or give orders with your finger, without using your voice. Sometimes it is much faster.

The display has a light sensor to turn off at night and light up during the day. And you can use it as a digital frame.

An important detail is that it does not have a camera . Google has not included it so as not to harm privacy. So you can’t make video calls , but instead you don’t have the feeling that a camera is continuously spying on you.

In addition, Nest Hub is also a smart speaker with the integrated Google Assistant, so it has all the functions that we have mentioned in the rest: play your music lists and podcast, answer your questions, check the weather, update your agenda, put alarms and timers, translate conversations, control Netflix and hundreds of compatible appliances, and much more.

The speaker offers good audio quality, but does not have the 360 degree range of the Google Home, being partially covered by the screen.

If you want to know more, we have thoroughly tested it in our analysis and opinion of the Google Nest Hub .

It is the most complete device from Google, because it has everything that smart speakers offer with the important extra that is a connected touch screen. But it is also the most expensive.
