What is Formal Education?


In past, formal education was limited to the wealthy to keep the lower class uneducated. After this all, it was to rule on majority of the masses were illiterate to protest. By the middle age, quality education was based on how much you could afford for your children. Education is now basic right for the children in whole world. A child is now require to attend school at a certain age of 6 in United States. Some poor parents are not able to educate there children or send them to school.  While there are private schools available for children whose parents can afford it.

What Is Formal Study?

Formal education is a structured and systematic form of learning.  The education of a standard expressed to students by trained teachers.  To make sure formal study is standardize and all learning institutions (e.g. schools, colleges, universities, etc.) In the case of the US, the Department of Education oversees it in all states. All teachers are train and license to teach children, and they’re the same teachers the students will see every day to keep their education and training consistent.

Formal , Informal and Non-formal

Formal Education

This education a popular educational method. But it is not the only. People who are not take longer formal education can still continue by informal or non-formal education.

Informal Education

This lacks the structure and standards of formal education.  And unlike its settings, informal education is completely optional.

Non-formal Education

This education is the mix of both formal and informal. While it has not a syllabus or curriculum. It is more structured than informal education.

Level of Formal Education

The level of it is divided into four parts.  At a young age, students learn the basics of general knowledge, and as they reach the end of mandatory formal education, they learn more complex facts. After graduating, they have the option to take further education in a specialized field.


Also called early or staring education level. Children of age 3 to 6 learn the basics like reading, writing, counting, and many more activities. While in some educational systems in the world require children to attend all the levels of preschool . In others, it is not necessary as long as children enter primary school capable of reading and writing.

Primary school

It deals with the first some years of education. During in this level children learn the fundamental of math, reading, drawing and many more. It is also known as the grade school.

Secondary school

It is also known as the high school. It is divide into lower secondary education and upper secondary education. Lower deals with the more advanced general knowledge on the subjects. While upper secondary education is starts to focus on education relevant to employment after mandatory education. They can seek further education specializing in their field of choice.

Post Secondary school

All optional knowledge falls under post secondary education. This includes undergraduate and graduate programs, law school, medical school, vocational school, community college, and many more.  The highest level of education one can pursue is post-graduate education.  The goal of making formal education mandatory is to ensure that everyone is literate and smart.
