Nowadays it is quite common to find climbing walls of a few meters in gyms, shopping malls, leisure centers, etc. But none can be compared to CopenHill, the highest climbing wall in the world .
It has been built in Copenhagen, in Denmark. They are 80 meters high in an area where it is quite windy. It is so dangerous that although it was completed in November, it was not opened until spring , when the weather is more benevolent. And it will not be open all year.
Perhaps you will notice in the opening photo, that the climbing wall is placed in a building with a huge fireplace. This is because it is a recycling plant . Its owners wanted to give the building another use, so they approved the construction of the highest climbing wall in the world.
The design and construction has been carried out by Walltopia , an architectural firm specialized in this type of buildings.
It was not easy, because it was not just about designing the wall, but also fitting into the architectural style of the power plant.
Due to the strong winds in the area, the structure is made of stainless steel, and plexiglass and glass fiber have been used to create the wall , which are materials that withstand weather elements well.
In total, the wall has an area of 1,200 square meters , and has been made with 55 tons of Bulgarian stainless steel, and 24 tons of plexiglass and fiberglass.
From a technical point of view it is divided into four parts , and in each of them climbers can rest a bit, by offering edges on which to lean. Several paths have been designed to climb, some more difficult than others.
If the weather is bad, the beginning is more complicated than the end, since there is more rope below and the wind moves it forcefully.
Since this spring it is already open to the public, and it is sure to become a place of pilgrimage for fans of this demanding sport.
