TV schedule for Daytona Road Course

Fox will televise the O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 at 3 p.m. on Sunday. NASCAR RaceDay will begin at 1:30 p.m. on FS1 and switch to Fox at 2:30 p.m.

Road Course Action Returns to Daytona

For the second consecutive year, the storied DAYTONA Road Course will play host to the NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. All three series will compete Feb. 19-21, just one week after the 63rd running of the DAYTONA 500.

The tripleheader on the iconic 14-turn, 3.61-mile road course-oval hybrid, creates a historic back-to-back weekend of action at the World Center of Racing to start the 2021 NASCAR season.

  • February 20: Super Start Batteries 188 At DAYTONA presented by O’Reilly Auto Parts (NASCAR Xfinity Series)
  • February 21: O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 At DAYTONA (NASCAR Cup Series)

When is the Daytona Road Course race?

The O’Reilly Auto Parts 253 is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 21 at Daytona International Speedway. At this time, we plan to implement procedures to safely host fans for DAYTONA Road Course Weekend, including limiting venue capacity to allow for socially distanced seating.

A limited number of tickets and camping are available now and kids 12 and under are free on Friday and Saturday in select sections and start at just $10 on Sunday

  • The Daytona Road Course was the site of the season-opening Busch Clash on Feb. 9 that race kicked off Speedweeks, leading up to the Feb. 14 Daytona 500.
  • The Daytona Road Course race will be the second of 36 points races on the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series schedule.

When is qualifying for the Daytona Road Course?

There is no practice or qualifying for the Daytona Road Course race due to COVID-19 restrictions. NASCAR will have practice and qualifying at only select events this season.

There will also be no practice or qualifying for the Xfinity Series and Camping World Truck Series at Daytona. But the schedule will also include a whopping six road courses, a trip to Nashville, and the Cup Series’ return to dirt after 50 years away.

  • To pull a true comparison, we’ll run down the changes this year against what the 2020 schedule was supposed to look like, back before the recent unpleasantness.
  • In doing so, we’ll get a good read on not just the location changes but also the dates themselves.

Why is the Daytona Road Course the second race of the season?

The Daytona Road Course was originally not part of the 2021 NASCAR schedule. It was added as a replacement for California Speedway, which had to opt-out of its race due to COVID restrictions in California.

The Daytona Road Course was moved to the second race of the season, with the race scheduled for Homestead-Miami Speedway moving from the second to the third week of the season.

  • A second straight weekend at Daytona was set after a shift in the schedule that will see Homestead-Miami Speedway have the third race of the season for the Cup and Xfinity Series along with Auto Club Speedway not being able to host a weekend because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The Camping World Truck Series was slated to compete at Homestead when it was to be the second race of the year, but the race was realigned to Daytona.

When is the Xfinity Series race on the Daytona Road Course?

The Super Start Batteries 188 at Daytona is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 20 on FS1.

START: The command to start engines will be given at 5:02 p.m. The green flag is scheduled to wave at 5:14 p.m.

PRERACE: The garage opens at 10:30 a.m. Drivers report to their vehicles at 4:35 p.m. Driver introductions are at 4:40 p.m. The invocation will be given at 4:54 p.m. The national anthem will be performed at 4:55 p.m.

DISTANCE: The race is 52 laps (187.72 miles) around the 3.61-mile road course.

STAGES: Stage 1 ends on Lap 15. Stage 2 ends on Lap 30.

TV/RADIO: FS1 will broadcast the race at 5 p.m. FS1’s coverage begins at 4:30 p.m. Motor Racing Network’s radio coverage will begin at 4:30 p.m. and also can be heard at mrn.com. SiriusXM NASCAR Radio will carry the broadcast.

STREAMING: Watch the FS1 broadcast here.

When is the NASCAR Truck Series race on the Daytona Road Course?

  • The BrakeBest Brake Pads 159 is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. on FS1.
  • “The famed road course at Daytona has a long and storied history with sports cars and motorcycles, and now we can write a new chapter on it with stock cars,” NASCAR Vice President of Racing Development Ben Kennedy said.
  • “Fans coming to the track will get to see six consecutive days of exciting NASCAR action, with no two days being the same.”

In contrast to the tightly-packed competition on the speedway’s famed 2.5-mile high-back-tri-oval, the reimagined Busch Clash will utilize approximately three-quarters of the tri-oval along with the challenging infield portion of the road course. That translates into 12 turns instead of the usual four.

Who are the favorites on the Daytona Road Course?

Chase Elliott has won the last four NASCAR Cup Series points races on road courses, including the inaugural race on the Daytona Road Course last August. His other victories have come at Watkins Glen (twice) and at the Charlotte Roval.

  • “Having driven on the road course at Daytona in the Rolex 24, I know how difficult the circuit can be,” said NASCAR Hall of Famer and current FOX NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon.

Charlotte Hornets (16-17) vs Portland Trail Blazers (18-14)

The Portland Trail Blazers are rested and back at home after a disheartening winless three game road trip. It shouldn’t have been completely surprising given the injuries and the quality of the opponents, but there is a hint of panic in the air. Now Portland has three winnable games, all at home, before they get a need rest for the All-Star Break. It feels like these next three games have outsized importance for the trajectory of the club. Win them all and recent losses will quickly fade from memory. Lose them all and it will start getting a bit tense at 1 North Center Court Street. It starts with Charlotte on Monday.

The Charlotte Hornets come into Moda Center with a similar feeling in that they need to start reeling off some wins. On the fifth game of a six game road trip, they have split their last four games, including a very surprising win against the surging Phoenix Suns. The Hornet have injury concerns of their own as they try to cling playoff spot in the East. Sunday night they won in dramatic fashion, roaring back from an eight point deficit with less than a minute to go to win 127-126 against the Sacramento Kings.

Hornets injuries: Cody Zeller (doubtful), Gordon Hayward (doubtful), Devonte’ Graham (day-to-day)

What To Watch For Charlotte Hornets vs Portland Trail Blazers

  • Protecting the 3-point line. The Hornets have three players shooting over 40% from deep. Gordon Hayward is at 42.1%, Terry Rozier at 44.3% and Malik Monk is at an incredible 47.1%. The Blazers may catch a break if Hayward can’t suit up, but harassing Rozier and Monk has to be a priority. While the Blazer’s three-point defense is much maligned, it’s not quite as bad you might think, holding opponents to 36.7%. That’s good for 13th best in the NBA. Fortunately for the Blazers the Hornets are worse, ranking 21st, allowing opponents to shoot 37.4% from beyond the arc.
  • Brother can you spare a dime? The Blazers are worst in the NBA at assists, generating only 19.9 per game. The Hornets are worst in the League at allowing assists, giving up 28.3. A common complaint of Blazers’ fans over the last four games is that the offense has stagnated too often. This game is a golden opportunity for Portland to share the love (and the ball) and get some assists.
  • Take advantage of the opportunity. The Hornets are on the fifth game of a six game road trip. They are on the second night of a road back-to-back while the Blazers have had a couple of days off at home. Injuries may limit who is available for Charlotte. Of course the Blazers have huge injury problems of their own, but the Blazers aren’t going to have the deck stacked in their favor as much as it is for this game too often. The Blazers need to grab this opportunity with both hands.

What Others Are Saying Charlotte Hornets vs Portland Trail Blazers

Dan Devin of the Ringer says that the patchwork roster in Charlotte is somehow largely working:

The Hornets may be misfits, but they can bring considerable versatility depending on matchups and circumstances. They can play big, with Zeller or Bismack Biyombo in as a traditional pivot, or small, with Miles Bridges and P.J. Washington up front, and still run lineups featuring secure ball handlers, smart passers, knockdown shooters, drivers, and interchangeable defenders all over the floor.

It’s not only the Blazers that has problems at the center position according to Rick Bonnel of the Charlotte Observer (Free Registration Required):

When Zeller can’t play, the Hornets don’t have a real Plan B. Borrego’s other center options are too small (Washington), too used-up (Biyombo) or too new (second-round rookie projects Vernon Carey and Nick Richards). There aren’t really schemes Borrego can employ at this point to hide that deficiency.

It’s not too often that Charlotte gets attention from the likes of Saturday Night Live, but Rookie of the Year candidate LaMelo Ball’s play gave Saturday Night Live an excuse to break out a LaVar Ball impression and deliver a few Charlotte zingers along the way. PG rated.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Charlotte Hornets Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers are in the midst of a season-worst four-game losing streak and now face the right type of opponent to help end their slide.

Portland will look to defeat the visiting Charlotte Hornets for the seventh straight time when the teams meet Monday night. Even more crucial is that the Trail Blazers have won 12 straight home games against Charlotte, which is just 6-24 all-time when visiting Portland.

Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts sounds like a coach who doesn’t want a good opportunity to slip away.

“We’ve lost four in a row and we need to win against Charlotte,” Stotts said, emphasizing the word “need.”

“So all our focus is on Charlotte.”

“I just tried to be aggressive the whole game,” Washington said. “I hunted out shots, I knew I could make them. And credit to my teammates for finding me the whole game. I’m just glad we came out with the victory. We were down big, and we just tried to fight our way back into it.”

Cavaliers vs Rockets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Cavaliers 109, Rockets 101

Money line (ML)

The Rockets have lost 11 games in a row. They faced the Cavs on the road last week and lost 112-96 as 5.5-point favorites.

The Cavaliers have won three straight games but were coming off a 10-game losing skid, so this game features two of the most struggling teams in the league. Houston is coming off a 49-point loss at home Sunday, so the Rockets appear to be reeling and have lost by an average of 24 points in their last four games, losing all by double digits.

The Rockets seem to have given up and are looking to the All-Star break. Take the CAVALIERS (+110).

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Not only have the Rockets lost 11 in a row, but they have also covered the spread only once in those 11 games.

The Cavs covered the spread in each of their last three games. The teams have the league’s two lowest cover percentages (Cleveland 38.2% and Houston 34.4%). That drops to 23.1% at home for Houston, while Cleveland is 25.0% on the road.

Take the CAVALIERS +2 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are among the lowest in Over percentages this season. Cleveland’s games go Over only 42.4% of the time and Houston’s go over 38.7% of the time.

Houston has scored 100 or fewer points in three of four games and the Cavs have scored exactly 112 in each of their last three games.

UNDER 216.5 POINTS (-110).

Cleveland Cavaliers vs  Houston Rockets preview

Given the results of the prior 10 games, it was difficult to determine if the Houston Rockets had already hit rock bottom during a losing skid that matched the longest in the NBA this season.

At Toyota Center on Sunday against the Memphis Grizzlies, the lowly Rockets found a new low, falling 133-84 as Memphis set franchise records for bench points (85) and for margin of victory.

“I hope so. Hope so,” Rockets first-year coach Stephen Silas said when asked if Houston had indeed bottomed out with its 11th consecutive defeat. “This is embarrassing.”

While the Rockets, who will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday at Toyota Center, have embarrassed themselves on several fronts, their woeful perimeter shooting continues to serve as their most glaring weakness. Houston entered Sunday ranked last in the NBA in 3-point percentage and lived down to that billing, missing 41 of 45 3-pointers for an astonishing 8.9 percent.

At 32 games, the sample size is large enough to conclude that Houston is indeed an awful 3-point shooting outfit.
