FrEE A trial is being held to decide whether former President Donald J. Trump is guilty of inciting a deadly mob of his supporters when they stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, violently breaching security

A trio of Republican senators allied with former President Donald Trump met with his defense team Thursday evening, in the middle of an impeachment trial in which they will vote on whether to convict Trump and potentially bar him from holding public office again.

Sens. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ted Cruz of Texas and Mike Lee of Utah were spotted going into a room in the US Capitol that Trump’s lawyers were using to prepare for their arguments.
Trump lawyer David Schoen said that the senators were “very friendly guys” who just wanted to make sure they were “familiar with procedure” on the eve of their rebuttal to the House impeachment managers’ presentation.
When asked if it’s appropriate to meet with senators during the trial, Schoen said, “Oh yeah, I think that’s the practice of impeachment.”
“There’s nothing about this thing that has any semblance of due process whatsoever,” he added.
Some senators view themselves as impartial jurors during impeachment trials, while others lend a hand to their party’s side.
Republican senators have already signaled that they will vote to acquit the former President of the charge of “incitement of insurrection,” preventing a subsequent vote on Trump’s political future. In a 50-50 Senate, the House impeachment managers — all of whom are Democrats — need to persuade 17 Republican senators to join every member of their party to convict Trump.
The managers on Thursday showed clips of Trump’s speech before the Capitol rampage on January 6, in which he urged his supporters to “fight like hell,” “never give up” and “never concede.” Many Republican senators point out that Trump also said “to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.” They’ve also blamed the rioters rather than the former President for the deadly violence that day.
Among the harrowing images presented during the impeachment trial of former President Donald J. Trump, one video stood out: a police officer sprinting toward a United States senator to warn of the angry mob nearby.

The senator, Mitt Romney, is shown turning on his heels and fleeing for safety.

“I don’t think my family or my wife understood that I was as close as I might have been to real danger,” Mr. Romney told reporters on Thursday, one day after the video showed Eugene Goodman, a Capitol Police officer already known for his bravery, aiding him. “They were surprised and very, very appreciative of Officer Goodman, in his being there and directing me back to safety.”

For Officer Goodman, it was the second time a video went viral displaying actions widely credited with saving members of Congress. The first, which showed him single-handedly luring a mob away from the entrance of the Senate toward an area with reinforcements, turned him into a hero. The second has added to his lore.

Both have catapulted Officer Goodman — a former Army infantryman who served in one of the most dangerous parts of Iraq during one of the most lethal times of the war — to fame he never sought.

On Wednesday, after watching the videos that showed Officer Goodman directing Mr. Romney to safety, Mr. Romney could be seen talking with Officer Goodman. Senator Rob Portman, Republican of Ohio, later walked over and fist-bumped Officer Goodman.

On Thursday, Speaker Nancy Pelosi singled out Officer Goodman for his courage when she introduced legislation to award the Capitol Police and other law enforcement personnel who responded on Jan. 6 with the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor of Congress. On Jan. 20, Officer Goodman was given the task of escorting Vice President Kamala Harris at the inauguration of President Joseph R. Biden Jr.

The Trump Impeachment ›
What You Need to Know
A trial is being held to decide whether former President Donald J. Trump is guilty of inciting a deadly mob of his supporters when they stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, violently breaching security measures and sending lawmakers into hiding as they met to certify President Biden’s victory.
The House voted 232 to 197 to approve a single article of impeachment, accusing Mr. Trump of “inciting violence against the government of the United States” in his quest to overturn the election results. Ten Republicans joined the Democrats in voting to impeach him.
To convict Mr. Trump, the Senate would need a two-thirds majority to be in agreement. This means at least 17 Republican senators would have to vote with Senate Democrats to convict.
A conviction seems unlikely. Last month, only five Republicans in the Senate sided with Democrats in beating back a Republican attempt to dismiss the charges because Mr. Trump is no longer in office. Only 27 senators say they are undecided about whether to convict Mr. Trump.
If the Senate convicts Mr. Trump, finding him guilty of “inciting violence against the government of the United States,” senators could then vote on whether to bar him from holding future office. That vote would only require a simple majority, and if it came down to party lines, Democrats would prevail with Vice President Kamala Harris casting the tiebreaking vote.
If the Senate does not convict Mr. Trump, the former president could be eligible to run for public office once again. Public opinion surveys show that he remains by far the most popular national figure in the Republican Party.

Veterans who served alongside Officer Goodman in the 101st Airborne Division some 15 years ago in Iraq say that the officer, known then as “Goody,” never craved accolades.

“I saw him come out in front of the vice president and he immediately ducked to the right,” said Mark Belda, who served with Officer Goodman in Iraq. “I thought that’s definitely Goody.”

When he closely watched the first video, Mr. Belda said, he saw attributes he recognized in Officer Goodman from Iraq. “He wasn’t prone to anger. As an infantryman, your job is to be violent but it was never his first reaction to use the stick before you use the carrot.”

In Iraq, Officer Goodman was a sergeant and a leader of a 10-man rifle squad who assumed new responsibilities soon after his unit arrived in 2005.

His “Hardrock Company” operated in the Sunni triangle area near Baghdad in central Iraq, where American troops engaged in some of the fiercest combat of the war.

The platoons were required to conduct multiple combat patrols each day to identify explosives before they were detonated, work that often resulted in various injuries, according to Lt. Col. Jeff Farmer, who served alongside Officer Goodman in the company.

“The front squad leader was critical, someone willing to take on this risk and lead his squad day in and day out,” Colonel Farmer said.

That leader was Officer Goodman.

“I cannot recall exactly how many dismounted patrols Goody led as a point man in the company, but I can say that it was likely in the hundreds, making him the go-to guy quite frankly when others needed that reassurance that things were going to be OK,” Colonel Farmer said.

Officer Goodman was a quiet professional, his superiors said, serious and focused on his missions but also quick with a joke to ease tension in the ranks, they said. His fellow soldiers could count on him to do “what needed to be done,” said John Greis, who served as his platoon sergeant in Iraq. “That’s coolness under pressure.”

Colonel Farmer said he was not surprised when he saw the video of Officer Goodman facing the angry mob in the Capitol.

“Calm, cool, and collected under fire, that’s just Goody,” Colonel Farmer said. “I trusted my life with him, and still would to this day.”

Officer Goodman is now in uncomfortable territory, according to his fellow veterans. He has not made public comments and did not return multiple requests for interviews, including a handwritten note at his apartment near District Heights, Md.

A neighbor said Officer Goodman had not returned to his apartment in the days after the attack at the Capitol, and had advised those in his apartment building not to speak to the news media.

“He doesn’t want to be in the center of the attention. He just wants to duck to the side and you all can do what you want to do,” said Mr. Belda, Mr. Goodman’s former first sergeant. “Let me do my job and you guys do what you want to do, just leave me alone.”

Cruz said the meeting with the Trump defense team was an opportunity for “sharing our thoughts” about their legal strategy. A wide array of Senate Republicans harshly criticized the defense team on Tuesday, the opening day of the trial, arguing that Trump attorney Bruce Castor had delivered a rambling and unfocused argument in making the case that the proceedings are unconstitutional.
When asked if he’s now comfortable with the Trump team’s legal strategy, Cruz said, “I think the end result of this impeachment trial is crystal clear to everybody.”
“Donald Trump will be acquitted,” he added. “It takes 67 votes to convict him and every person in the Senate chamber understands that there are not the votes to convict, nor should there be.”

Charlotte Hornets (16-17) vs Portland Trail Blazers (18-14)

The Portland Trail Blazers are rested and back at home after a disheartening winless three game road trip. It shouldn’t have been completely surprising given the injuries and the quality of the opponents, but there is a hint of panic in the air. Now Portland has three winnable games, all at home, before they get a need rest for the All-Star Break. It feels like these next three games have outsized importance for the trajectory of the club. Win them all and recent losses will quickly fade from memory. Lose them all and it will start getting a bit tense at 1 North Center Court Street. It starts with Charlotte on Monday.

The Charlotte Hornets come into Moda Center with a similar feeling in that they need to start reeling off some wins. On the fifth game of a six game road trip, they have split their last four games, including a very surprising win against the surging Phoenix Suns. The Hornet have injury concerns of their own as they try to cling playoff spot in the East. Sunday night they won in dramatic fashion, roaring back from an eight point deficit with less than a minute to go to win 127-126 against the Sacramento Kings.

What To Watch For Charlotte Hornets vs Portland Trail Blazers

  • Protecting the 3-point line. The Hornets have three players shooting over 40% from deep. Gordon Hayward is at 42.1%, Terry Rozier at 44.3% and Malik Monk is at an incredible 47.1%. The Blazers may catch a break if Hayward can’t suit up, but harassing Rozier and Monk has to be a priority. While the Blazer’s three-point defense is much maligned, it’s not quite as bad you might think, holding opponents to 36.7%. That’s good for 13th best in the NBA. Fortunately for the Blazers the Hornets are worse, ranking 21st, allowing opponents to shoot 37.4% from beyond the arc.
  • Brother can you spare a dime? The Blazers are worst in the NBA at assists, generating only 19.9 per game. The Hornets are worst in the League at allowing assists, giving up 28.3. A common complaint of Blazers’ fans over the last four games is that the offense has stagnated too often. This game is a golden opportunity for Portland to share the love (and the ball) and get some assists.
  • Take advantage of the opportunity. The Hornets are on the fifth game of a six game road trip. They are on the second night of a road back-to-back while the Blazers have had a couple of days off at home. Injuries may limit who is available for Charlotte. Of course the Blazers have huge injury problems of their own, but the Blazers aren’t going to have the deck stacked in their favor as much as it is for this game too often. The Blazers need to grab this opportunity with both hands.

What Others Are Saying Charlotte Hornets vs Portland Trail Blazers

Dan Devin of the Ringer says that the patchwork roster in Charlotte is somehow largely working:

The Hornets may be misfits, but they can bring considerable versatility depending on matchups and circumstances. They can play big, with Zeller or Bismack Biyombo in as a traditional pivot, or small, with Miles Bridges and P.J. Washington up front, and still run lineups featuring secure ball handlers, smart passers, knockdown shooters, drivers, and interchangeable defenders all over the floor.

It’s not only the Blazers that has problems at the center position according to Rick Bonnel of the Charlotte Observer (Free Registration Required):

When Zeller can’t play, the Hornets don’t have a real Plan B. Borrego’s other center options are too small (Washington), too used-up (Biyombo) or too new (second-round rookie projects Vernon Carey and Nick Richards). There aren’t really schemes Borrego can employ at this point to hide that deficiency.

It’s not too often that Charlotte gets attention from the likes of Saturday Night Live, but Rookie of the Year candidate LaMelo Ball’s play gave Saturday Night Live an excuse to break out a LaVar Ball impression and deliver a few Charlotte zingers along the way. PG rated.

Portland Trail Blazers vs Charlotte Hornets Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers are in the midst of a season-worst four-game losing streak and now face the right type of opponent to help end their slide.

Portland will look to defeat the visiting Charlotte Hornets for the seventh straight time when the teams meet Monday night. Even more crucial is that the Trail Blazers have won 12 straight home games against Charlotte, which is just 6-24 all-time when visiting Portland.

Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts sounds like a coach who doesn’t want a good opportunity to slip away.

“We’ve lost four in a row and we need to win against Charlotte,” Stotts said, emphasizing the word “need.”

“So all our focus is on Charlotte.”

“I just tried to be aggressive the whole game,” Washington said. “I hunted out shots, I knew I could make them. And credit to my teammates for finding me the whole game. I’m just glad we came out with the victory. We were down big, and we just tried to fight our way back into it.”

Cavaliers vs Rockets: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Cavaliers 109, Rockets 101

Money line (ML)

The Rockets have lost 11 games in a row. They faced the Cavs on the road last week and lost 112-96 as 5.5-point favorites.

The Cavaliers have won three straight games but were coming off a 10-game losing skid, so this game features two of the most struggling teams in the league. Houston is coming off a 49-point loss at home Sunday, so the Rockets appear to be reeling and have lost by an average of 24 points in their last four games, losing all by double digits.

The Rockets seem to have given up and are looking to the All-Star break. Take the CAVALIERS (+110).

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

Not only have the Rockets lost 11 in a row, but they have also covered the spread only once in those 11 games.

The Cavs covered the spread in each of their last three games. The teams have the league’s two lowest cover percentages (Cleveland 38.2% and Houston 34.4%). That drops to 23.1% at home for Houston, while Cleveland is 25.0% on the road.

Take the CAVALIERS +2 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams are among the lowest in Over percentages this season. Cleveland’s games go Over only 42.4% of the time and Houston’s go over 38.7% of the time.

Houston has scored 100 or fewer points in three of four games and the Cavs have scored exactly 112 in each of their last three games.

UNDER 216.5 POINTS (-110).

Cleveland Cavaliers vs  Houston Rockets preview

Given the results of the prior 10 games, it was difficult to determine if the Houston Rockets had already hit rock bottom during a losing skid that matched the longest in the NBA this season.

At Toyota Center on Sunday against the Memphis Grizzlies, the lowly Rockets found a new low, falling 133-84 as Memphis set franchise records for bench points (85) and for margin of victory.

“I hope so. Hope so,” Rockets first-year coach Stephen Silas said when asked if Houston had indeed bottomed out with its 11th consecutive defeat. “This is embarrassing.”

While the Rockets, who will host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday at Toyota Center, have embarrassed themselves on several fronts, their woeful perimeter shooting continues to serve as their most glaring weakness. Houston entered Sunday ranked last in the NBA in 3-point percentage and lived down to that billing, missing 41 of 45 3-pointers for an astonishing 8.9 percent.

At 32 games, the sample size is large enough to conclude that Houston is indeed an awful 3-point shooting outfit. But during their 136-106 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Feb. 1, the Rockets set a franchise record with 28 3s. That performance, while aberrant, showcased their potential and underscored that their current stretch of shooting might be equally unusual.

Houston is shooting 28.2 percent from deep over the 13 games since that victory over the Thunder.

“The missing of shots is really plaguing us this season,” Silas said. “To go 4 for 45 from 3 is like, there’s not a word for it.

“I told the guys after the game that they’re tight. They want it so bad. You don’t miss this many shots without having some sort of tightness in your emotions, your body … because you want to make it so bad. And the belief that I have in this group doesn’t waver, hasn’t wavered. And that’s what I told them. We have an opportunity to rectify it against Cleveland. The shot stuff is hard.”
