Badhai Ho Clocks 2 Years: Ayushmannn Khurrana Reminisces Amit Sharma Directorial, Says ‘I Tried to Normalise the Sexual Desire That Our Parents Can Have’

The Ayushmannn Khurrana-starrer comedy, Badhaai Ho, released two years ago on this day. The actor says he has been trying to normalise taboo conversations in India through his cinema. The Amit Sharma directorial revolves around an aging couple, played by Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao, who must deal with a case of accidental pregnancy. Ayushmann essayed their son, while Sanya Malhotra was cast as his girlfriend. Bade Miyan Chote Miyan Completes 22 Years: Raveena Tandon Shares Her Favourite Memory From the Shoot of Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda’s Classic Comedy

“I have been trying to normalise taboo conversations in India through my cinema. Right from my debut film ‘Vicky Donor’, you will notice that I have tried to do my bit to have a constructive conversation with society about the need for change,” Ayushmann said. He added: “I have strongly felt that through cinema, we could tell society to widen its gaze towards important subjects that were not being addressed.” Bade Miyan Chote Miyan Clocks 22 Years: Anupam Kher Reminisces Amitabh Bachchan, Govinda’s Classic Comedy, Shares a Goofy Pic From the Film

Ayushmann is happy that India has accepted his films. “We are a shy country, and there is beauty to it, but what I am happy about is how people of my country have appreciated my style of cinema,” he said. Ayushmann said that “Badhaai Ho” was an attempt to highlight the fact that physical love between parents should not be frowned upon. “Their love is the biggest proof that our society wants to normalise deepseated issues, and that’s the biggest validation for me as an artiste.

With ‘Badhaai Ho’, I tried to normalise the sexual desire that our parents can have, and there’s nothing wrong in that.” He added that for Bollywood, such a storyline was rare but it was necessary. The makers of “Badhai Ho” have announced a follow-up, “Badhai Do”, recently. The new film will star Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar.

In the episode, on again off again friends, Jaan Kumar Sanu and Nikki Tamboli are having a rough day. Nikki starts talking in Marathi to co-contestant Rahul Vaidya. So, Jaan, who doesn’t understands Marathi, asks her to speak in Hindi if she has the guts. “Marathi mein mat bat mere samne, chidh hoti hai mujhe,” he tells her. Nikki assures him that they were not talking about him.

To be noted, Jaan simply might be saying that he is irritated when Nikki speaks in Marathi so that he doesn’t understand it. His words might not be a remark about the language at all.

The film festival, based in Boston, USA, was held virtually this year, from October 16 to 18. “I was very nervous at the start but then eventually we felt comfortable. It was very different and sometimes difficult, doing a virtual film festival, but it was a new way to learn,” said IIFFB founder and festival director Razia Mashkoor. Talking about the festival, judge Rohit Chandra said: “Although our annual film festival is typically in person, the virtual format allowed us to organise several Zoom panels, bringing together Bollywood icons and film lovers alike to debate salient film-related topics. The virtual format also allowed the viewer to enjoy IIFFB’s film selections from the comfort of their own homes.”

To this, another judge Suraja Menon Roy Chowdhury shared: “The breadth of creativity displayed, as well as the topics showcased in the submissions was impressive. With film entries from 11 countries, we were able to glimpse different cultures as well as appreciate the talent present in both independent and commercial cinema globally. This was truly an International Film Festival!” The dates for next edition of the film festival were also announced. Next year, the festival is scheduled to be held from September 24 to 26.
