Anthony Davis' monster game helps Lakers win over Bucks

They handed him cigars, gave him big hugs and greeted him with a smile.

Walking down the back aisle of the Fiserv Forum, good luck finding someone to say something bad about Lakers coach Darwin Hamm because here, where he won championships as an assistant on coach Mike Budenholzer’s staff, he’s beloved.

He even got a quick scoreboard tribute and a good round of applause from the fans.

Everything but an easy win.

The Lakers had to earn that.

With Anthony Davis (44 points, 10 rebounds), LeBron James (28 points, 11 assists, eight rebounds) and Russell Westbrook (15 points, 11 assists, seven rebounds) all outstanding games, the Lakers beat the Bucks 133-129 Haim returns to Milwaukee – easily the best win of the season for the Lakers.

For Davis, it was his highest score since January 3, 2020, when he scored 46.

The Bucks, who brought back All-Star forward Khris Middleton for the first time since April, were led by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s 40 points. Junior Holiday added 28 points while Middleton added 17.

The game had almost everything – stars making big plays, role players moving up and back and forth, with Grayson Allen and Holliday missing three-point attempts in the final 30 seconds.

There was even some history, with James surpassing Magic Johnson for sixth on the all-time career assists list in the fourth quarter.

James and the Lakers got a bit of a scare early in the fourth quarter when James tangled with Middleton on the block. As they fell awkwardly, Middleton’s knee dug into James’ repeatedly rolled left ankle, forcing him to quickly catch her in pain. He stayed on the court and was able to limp to the bench during a timeout before remaining in the game.

The Lakers continue their road trip on Sunday against the Wizards in Washington.
